ScandinavianRest Weighted Blanket Review

By: Katrine - February 2, 2022 - Morklubben

After a hectic day, there's nothing I love more than crawling into bed with a warm cup of coffee and a good book. As someone who struggles with anxiety, for several years I've worked on falling asleep better and sleeping without many awakenings. Previously, I slept terribly. I tossed and turned constantly - while my husband snored for hours, and I just lay there thinking about how many hours of sleep I could potentially get if I could just fall asleep right now... And when I tried to force myself to sleep, it only became more challenging!

As I've shared previously, lately I've started a new evening routine that helps me wind down before bed. In the mornings, I actually feel refreshed now, and I even exercise then too. Most nights, I sleep well, but I'm always looking for new natural ways to improve my sleep. So when I had the opportunity to try one of ScandinavianRest's weighted blankets, to give a review, I didn't hesitate.

Benefits of a weighted blanket

There are actually quite a few scientific studies that have investigated the effect of weighted blankets, and they suggest that they can alleviate symptoms of insomnia, stress, anxiety, as well as relieve sensory disorders and other uncomfortable diagnoses such as restless legs, fibromyalgia, etc. The internet is filled with reviews from people who are completely fanatical about weighted blankets, claiming they have changed their lives. So, how do they work?

"It has to do with the proprioceptive sense, which is a sense that weighted blankets affect," explains ScandinavianRest on their website. "In fact, proprioception is one of the senses we rarely focus on, despite its crucial and significant role in our lives. It informs the brain about your position in relation to your surroundings, which allows the brain to relax and recharge."

ScandinavianRest also has weighted blankets for children and teenagers

The extra weight from the weighted blanket puts your nervous system into "relaxation mode," which reduces some of the symptoms of anxiety, such as a high heart rate or breathing problems. It can help provide an overall sense of calm. The increased weight of the blanket also utilizes "Deep Pressure Touch Stimulation," which helps your body relax and is believed to increase the amount of happiness hormones, such as dopamine and serotonin. These hormones fight stress, anxiety, and depression.

In fact, the weighted blanket was originally used as a tool by doctors in the 1990s to help overstimulated children relax. In recent years, however, the blanket has become much more mainstream, and people who "just" seek increased calmness use them with great pleasure.

The hand-knitted weighted blanket from ScandinavianRest is absolutely beautiful and has many of the same effects as the duvet.

The bamboo weighted blanket from ScandinavianRest

If you sweat a lot when you sleep (which I unfortunately always do), or live in a hot climate, the thought of having a large, heavy duvet over you can sound particularly unpleasant. Therefore, I must say that I was incredibly relieved when ScandinavianRest told me that their duvets are made of bamboo. The weighted blanket still gives you the same effects, but without making you too hot. The unique, ultra-high-quality bamboo fibers have temperature-regulating properties - which means they help you achieve the perfect body temperature when you sleep. The glass beads that provide the comfortable weight also help distribute heat.

Lyocell bamboo fabric is also sweat-absorbing, as it wicks away moisture, and it is incredibly good at actively combating odors from sweat, for example, as it naturally has antibacterial properties.

My personal experience and thoughts on the weighted blanket from ScandinavianRest

When I received the package from ScandinavianRest, it first came in an incredibly nice white cardboard box with their logo on it. I opened it and found that the weighted blanket comes in a cute, reusable carrying bag - super smart for storing it! The first thing I noticed when I took the blanket out was (besides its incredibly beautiful color) that it was incredibly heavy. I knew I had bought a heavy blanket, but it was clearly heavier than I thought!

Choosing the blanket's weight: ScandinavianRest Weighted Blankets come in different sizes and weights. The website has a guide to help you choose the correct weight, based on your own body weight. A study on weighted blankets found that a blanket weighing approximately 10% of an adult's body weight was the most effective. So don't think that the heavier the blanket, the more benefits you'll get. For children, ScandinavianRest also has a guide on choosing the weight.

The first time I put the Scandinavian weighted blanket over me, I'll admit I wasn't a big fan. My immediate feeling was that I felt trapped. I didn't feel it relieved my anxiety at all - in fact, it probably gave me more. But having done my research beforehand, I read about many people who loved their blanket, and that you should give yourself an adjustment period. So I tried again the next day, and was surprised that it felt much more comfortable than before. By the 3rd day, I couldn't even wait until bedtime to crawl under the blanket, so I used it during the day on the sofa too. I was so happy with it!

Not only have I fallen asleep faster at night, but I've also woken up far fewer times during the night. I feel better rested and get more out of the day. It actually feels like getting a hug and gives you a great sense of security and comfort, which I love. But if my family is anything to go by, whether you enjoy the feeling of the blanket is very subjective. My husband can't stand being under it for more than 5 minutes - whereas my 15-year-old son (with ADHD), who normally has difficulty settling down, becomes a complete sloth when he's under it, and he loves how it calms his body. So even though I can say that I personally love it and would definitely recommend it, I think it's worth mentioning that it's not for everyone.

If you are interested in trying one but are unsure if it is right for you, ScandinavianRest offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you don't love it, you can return it and get your money back. I think that's an incredibly fair deal.
